[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The term “food safe” is often used colloquially for a product that is “suitable” for use in the food sector. However, this term is not defined. With regard to surface coatings such as paints and varnishes, there are two regulations that are often associated with the meaning “food safe”.<\/p>\n

The complex requirements of Regulation (EU) 10\/2011 apply to all coatings that are actually in direct contact with food. For example, surfaces over open food in production and cold storage rooms or tank and silo coatings. Regulation (EC) 852\/2004 Food Hygiene Regulation describes the special requirements for surfaces in rooms where food is prepared, treated or processed. For example, ceiling and wall surfaces in production and storage rooms in food processing companies. The question “What does food-safe mean?” cannot be answered unambiguously because the term is not defined. It is important to clarify whether or not a desired “food-safe” coating actually comes into contact with an open foodstuff directly or also indirectly, e.g. via dripping water formation.<\/p>\n

The manufacturer confirms whether a coating is suitable and certified for direct contact with food by means of a current, complete declaration of compliance in accordance with Regulation (EU) 10\/2011.<\/p>\n
