How to remove mould in the home?

The appropriate measures to remove mould on the wall or ceiling depend on the substrate and the intensity of the infestation. In the case of organic substrates, e.g. sheetrock, gypsum plaster, removal is always recommended in the case of severe mould and bacterial infestation. In the case of mineral substrates, damp cleaning of the substrate and subsequent treatment of the surface with an antifungal solution is the practical, cost-oriented, efficient measure to remove mould from the wall. This is also an initial measure that can be carried out in the short term to reduce the health risk to the occupants. However, removing mould from wallpaper is not possible by cleaning and applying an antifungal solution. The wallpaper must be removed and the wall underneath checked for possible infestation. In order to remove mould from the wall in the long term, the cause of the mould infestation must also be clarified and the possible cause of the damage must be thoroughly eliminated.

Possible causes of damage can be:

  • Ventilation behaviour of the occupants
  • Thermal bridges
  • Placement of furniture (especially on uninsulated exterior walls)
  • Damage to pipes
  • Leaks (masonry and façade)
  • Energy renovation without a ventilation concept
