Hygienic coatings for the meat industry
The requirements for coatings for ceilings and walls in the meat processing industry are high. When selecting the coating for ceilings and walls, the specific requirements for materials in direct contact with food according to VO (EU) 10/2011 as well as the special regulations of the Food Hygiene Regulation must be observed. Food is stored unpackaged in cold storage and ripening rooms. In these rooms, there is a particularly high demand on room hygiene. The permanently high humidity promotes the growth of mould and bacteria on the surface.
If ceilings and walls in production, cooling and storage rooms in the meat industry are renovated, the general conditions for carrying out the work and the requirements for the coating should be clarified beforehand.
What properties must the surface have after renovation?
- Certification for direct contact with food according to VO (EU) 10/2011 and/or FDA 21 CFR 175.300
- Surface protection against mould, viruses and bacteria (BLUE-BIO.FILM.STOP technology)
- Surface protection against viruses and bacteria (GREEN-BIO.FILM.STOP technology)
- Medium, high or very high cleaning and chemical resistance
Other decisive factors for the selection of the appropriate coating are:
- Time frame for the renovation
- Type and condition of substrate (concrete, sandwich panels, plaster, Substrate with or without (load-bearing) old coating
- Application temperatures, e.g. below +12°C / below +10°C / below +4°C

Important!
The substrate pre-treatment. This means cleaning, substrate remediation, consolidation and possibly the use of a rust inhibitor or adhesion promoter. These measures are important to ensure the adhesion of the coating and to achieve a surface that can withstand long-term stress. Further functional FAKOLITH system products are available for substrate pre-treatment. The Technical Data Sheets and Renovation Concepts contain corresponding information on substrate pre-treatment.
