FOODGRADE – Certified for direct contact with food

What does FOODGRADE mean?

In our product portfolio, the term FOODGRADE stands for products that have been proved for direct contact with food.

These products correspondent to the specific requirements and migration limits for coatings in direct contact with food according to VO (EC) 1935/2004, VO (EU) 10/2011, VO (EU) 1282/2011, VO(EU) 2016/1416, VO (EC) 1895/2005 (only for epoxy resin products), VO (EC) 2023/2006, VO (EC) 2018/213 and/or FDA 21 CFR 175.300.

Where are FOODGRADE coatings used?

Wherever food comes into direct or indirect contact with a surface. Examples of surfaces in direct contact are food tanks, grain silos, ripening basins for cheese, floor surfaces in storage rooms in the agricultural industry.

Indirect contact is, for example, the formation of dripping water in the ceiling area. Here, there is a risk that an unpackaged food product can be contaminated via the condensate due to an unsuitable ceiling coating.

How are FOODGRADE coatings tested?

FOODGRADE products for the European market are tested according to Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011. This regulation governs the technical requirements for plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Global and specific migration tests are carried out with various simulants. FAKOLITH FOODGRADE products are tested with simulants A, B, C, D2 respectively (OM2-40°C for dispersions, OM4-100°C for 2K coatings). This means that the migration tests allow direct contact of the coating with all foods.

Some FAKOLITH FOODGRADE coatings meet the requirements of both the European standard VO (EU) 10/2011 and the US standard FDA 21 CFR 175.300.

The FDA 21 CFR 175.300 specifies the requirements for resin and polymer coatings required for food contact surfaces on the US market.

What does the manufacturer’s declaration of conformity stand for?

The declaration of conformity is a written confirmation at the end of a conformity assessment with which the manufacturer bindingly declares that the product has the properties specified on the declaration. In our declarations of conformity you will find all information on the global and specific migration tests as well as the organoleptic and mechanical tests carried out in accordance with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 175.300. By signing the declaration of conformity, FAKOLITH assumes full responsibility for ensuring that the FOODGRADE product sold complies with the applicable EU or US law. All test certificates and evidence relating to manufacture are archived and are available for inspection by the authorities if necessary.

What does “food safe” mean?

The term “food safe” is often used colloquially for a product that is suitable for use in the food sector. However, this term is not defined. The suitability of a coating for direct contact with a foodstuff is only confirmed by a declaration of conformity that is complete in terms of content and signed.
